Media freedom essential for development of democracy: Fakhrul
"Efforts should be made to establish a free and independent media without imposing any form of pressure or control on journalists"
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that freedom of the media is extremely important for the development of democracy.
"Efforts should be made to establish a free and independent media without imposing any form of pressure or control on journalists," he said in a brief speech before an iftar with journalists at the National Press Club today (11 March).
Fakhrul said, "We are deeply grateful to Allah that today we are able to gather once again in a free environment with our journalist brothers for iftar. This institution bears witness to many of our struggles, battles and memories. Those memories are not only of struggle, but also of trust."
He said the cooperation received from journalists in the past would always be remembered.
Recalling BNP's former chairperson Khaleda Zia, he said, "She always maintained a very good relationship with the media and media professionals. Unfortunately, she is not with us on this day. We pray for the forgiveness of her soul and for her place in paradise."
