Govt to play responsible role in protecting media freedom, journos' welfare: Info minister
Swapan also warned that interference by the home ministry or any other government office in media-related matters could pose risks to professional independence.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has assured that the government will play a responsible role in safeguarding media freedom and ensuring the welfare of journalists.
"Journalism is an independent profession. Therefore, its problems, crises or disputes should be addressed within its own policies and established structures," he made the remarks at a discussion marking Language Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day at the Barishal Shilpakala Academy today (21 February).
Swapan also warned that interference by the home ministry or any other government office in media-related matters could pose risks to professional independence.
The minister further said, "The process of updating the Wage Board has already begun to ensure professional stability and security for journalists."
Describing the media as a crucial bridge between the government and the people, he said journalists face various practical challenges in carrying out their duties. "The government has taken initiatives to identify these challenges and address them."
"Democracy cannot function in a country without a free press. I will assume the role of guardian of the media. Media freedom will be ensured," he added.
On women's empowerment, the minister said, "A coordinated plan will be implemented to ensure the economic and social empowerment of women. The 'Family Card' programme will be launched on a priority basis within this month."
He also informed that a nationwide mapping initiative will be undertaken to address unemployment.
