Munshiganj independent candidate supporter killing stemmed from prior family feud: Army
Lieutenant Colonel Akib Jaber added that Jasim had earlier been involved in a scuffle over a family dispute with the attackers.
The killing of independent candidate supporter Md Jasim Nayeb in Munshiganj after the national polls stemmed from a prior family feud, the Army said today (14 February)
Speaking at a press briefing, Lieutenant Colonel Akib Jaber said a previous dispute existed between Jasim and Nasir Dewan, adding that the attack took place after the election and was linked to the family conflict.
He added that Jasim had earlier been involved in a scuffle over a family dispute with the attackers.
Later, following an altercation related to the election, supporters from Nasir Dewan's side allegedly launched a sudden attack on Jasim's house.
Jasim sustained injuries and later died while undergoing treatment at hospital. Efforts were underway to arrest those involved, the lieutenant colonel said.
Md Jasim Nayeb, 30, died yesterday (13 February) while receiving treatment after being injured in post-election violence in the Char Abdullah area of Munshiganj Sadar.
He was a supporter of an independent candidate for the Munshiganj-3 (Sadar–Gazaria) seat and expelled BNP leader Md Mohiuddin, and was also responsible for managing a local madrasa.
Jasim's family alleged that the attackers were supporters of the BNP-nominated candidate for the Munshiganj-3 seat, Md Kamruzzaman Ratan.
The victim's elder brother, Md Mashiur Rahman, said nearly 200 supporters of the 'sheaf of paddy' symbol, led by Sakib, son of Nasir Dewan, came to their house and attacked Jasim.
Attempts were made to contact the newly elected Member of Parliament and BNP Central Social Welfare Affairs Secretary Md Kamruzzaman Ratan for comment, but he did not respond to phone calls.
