Chhayanaut stages musical solidarity rally against cultural attacks

Renowned cultural organisation Chhayanaut today (23 December) organised a musical solidarity rally protesting, what it described as, violent attacks on Bengali culture and freedom of expression.
The programme was held at 4pm in front of the Chhayanaut Cultural Centre in Dhanmondi, drawing artists, writers, intellectuals, journalists and members of various cultural organisations.
During the rally, Chhayanaut artistes performed a series of iconic songs in chorus that reflected the spirit of Bengali culture, humanity, secularism, and resistance. The performances included several well-known patriotic and protest songs, with the event concluding with the national anthem.
Speakers at the gathering said fundamentalist and extremist forces, including the defeated elements of 1971, fear cultural organisations such as Chhayanaut and Udichi, which is why they resort to attacks. They asserted that such acts would not silence them and vowed to continue their resistance through cultural expression.
The rally was organised protesting the attack on Chhayanaut building late Thursday night, when the premises were vandalised and set on fire amid protests following the death of Inqilab Mancha leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi.
