Actress Mehazabien, brother get bail after surrender in threat, intimidation case
They appeared before Dhaka Chief Magistrate Court-3 this evening (16 November), where Magistrate Afroza Haque Tania accepted their surrender and approved their bail following a hearing.
A Dhaka court today (16 November) granted bail to actress Mehazabien Chowdhury and her brother Alisan Chowdhury after they surrendered before it in a case accusing them of issuing threats and intimidation.
Executive Magistrate Afroza Haque Tania accepted their surrender and approved the bail following a hearing, said their lawyer, Tuhin Hawladar.
Earlier in the afternoon, the same court had issued arrest warrants against the siblings for failing to appear on their scheduled court date on 3 November. After reports of the warrants surfaced in the media today, they surrendered and sought bail, the lawyer added.
Following the bail order, Mehazabien was seen smiling and flashing a "V" sign to the media.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff Amirul Islam alleged that, due to a long-standing acquaintanceship, he was persuaded by Mehazabien with promises of being made a partner in a new family business. Over several dates, he reportedly gave her Tk27 lakh, both in cash and through mobile financial service bKash.
As Mehazabien and her brother allegedly took no steps to initiate the business for a long time, the plaintiff repeatedly asked for his money back, but they continued to delay, stated the complaint.
It was also alleged that on 11 February, when Amirul Islam again sought repayment, they reportedly told him to meet them at a restaurant beside Hatirjheel Road on 16 March.
The complainant said that when he arrived, the actress, her brother, and 4-5 unidentified individuals verbally abused him using obscene language. They allegedly warned him: "Don't ever come to our house to ask for money again. If we see you in front of our house again, we will kill you."
He claimed they threatened his life and intimidated him. When he went to Vatara Police Station seeking redress, police advised him to file a case with the court.
Amirul subsequently filed the case the same day with the Dhaka Executive Magistrate's Court under Sections 107 and 117(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
In court, Mehazabien's lawyer stated that the allegations were entirely baseless. "The entire incident has been fabricated. The plaintiff has no prior acquaintance with the accused. They have never met, nor have they communicated," he said.
'I am not engaged in any business that could involve legal complications'
When reports of the arrest warrants surfaced in the media, Mehazabien, in a Facebook post, wrote, "I was surprised to see news about a false and fabricated case. I believe the matter is entirely baseless and nothing more than a deliberately spread rumour."
"I do not know anyone who has filed this unfounded case. I am not engaged in any business that could involve legal complications," she added.
The actress further said, "My lawyer has already initiated the proper legal procedures to stop these rumours and false campaigns, ensuring that no one can deliberately create such situations in the future."
She also requested media professionals not to publish any information without proper verification.
