A madrasah teacher was killed and three others were injured in a bomb and gun attack carried out by unidentified assailants on a local BNP leader's office in Khulna last night (2 November).
The deceased was Imdadul Haque, 48, a teacher at Bochitola Nurani Hafezia Madrasah.
The attack occurred at around 9pm in the Kuet Road area.
Among the injured are Mamun Sheikh, 45, organising secretary of Jogipol union BNP unit and a union parishad member, whose office came under attack; Bellal Khan, 55; and Mizanur Rahman, 58.
Mamun and Bellal were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH), with reports indicating Mamun's condition is critical.
Locals told The Business Standard that Mamun Sheikh was holding a meeting with local BNP activists at his office. Imdadul Haque, the slain madrasah teacher, and several others were reportedly present to seek contributions for a mahfil (religious gathering).
At approximately 9pm, individuals on motorcycles arrived and launched an attack, hurling bombs and opening fire on the office. Imdadul was critically injured instantly and was rushed to KMCH by locals, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Anik, the victim's son, said, "My father was killed while collecting money for a mahfil. I am preparing for my medical exams. He was the kindest person in the area. It was my father's dream for me to become a doctor. I do not know how I will continue my studies now."
Kazi Mizanur Rahman, president of Khan Jahan Ali thana unit of the BNP, alleged that the attack was specifically intended to kill Mamun Sheikh.
Md Tuhinuzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khan Jahan Ali Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating that one teacher was killed and three people were injured in the attack.
He added that an investigation is underway to identify those involved.
Meanwhile, Aranghata Police Station OC Khairul Bashar said Mamun frequently gathered with party workers at his office, where a meeting was ongoing when the attackers threw bombs and fired shots.
"Mamun's condition is critical. An operation has been launched to arrest the attackers," he said.
