In the face of students' demonstration, the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) administration has assured to announce the roadmap, election schedule, and commission formation date for the long-awaited Shahjalal University Central Students' Union (Sucsu) polls on 27 October.
"After discussions with the vice-chancellor, we've been assured that the Sucsu election roadmap and the election commission will be announced on 27 October," acting vice-chancellor Professor Sajedul Karim told the protesting students this evening (22 October) in front of the university's administrative building.
Protesting student Sazzad Hossain, a postgraduate student of the Mathematics Department, said, "The administration has clearly stated that the roadmap, schedule, and commission formation will be announced on 27 October.
"We expect the exact election date to be revealed then. If not, we'll resume our movement with greater intensity."
However, repeated attempts to reach Professor Sajedul Karim for comment were unsuccessful.
Earlier, around 3pm, a group of students staged a sit-in protest in front of the administrative building. demanding the long-awaited election of the Sucsu.
They chanted slogans such as "Sucsu is our right," "Administration, remember — Sucsu in November," and "No more delay over Sucsu election." Around 6pm, they withdrew their demonstration.
The protesting students said they have repeatedly placed their demand for the Sucsu election before the university authorities in a peaceful manner.
"Although the administration has verbally assured us several times, no effective steps have been taken yet. We want to make it clear — we will not accept any more procrastination over the Sucsu election," they said.
Earlier, on 19 October, the students issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the university authorities through a human chain to announce a roadmap for the Sucsu election. However, the administration failed to deliver within the deadline.
