A prisoner admitted to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital also known as Mitford Hospital escaped early today at around 4am while three guards were sleeping.

However, ten hours after escaping, the Tangail district jail prisoner was rearrested around 2pm from the Babu Bazaar bridge area, just a few hundred yards from the hospital.

He has now been detained by Dhaka Central Jail authorities, jailer Mahbub Islam confirmed to The Business Standard.

The prisoner Mintu Mia, 28, is accused in a drug case.

He was admitted with symptoms of respiratory distress (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and chest pain on the evening of August 28, said Brig Gen Kazi Rashid-un-Nabi, director of the hospital.

He was receiving treatment under the supervision of the Assistant Chief Guard Mubarak Mia, Prison Guard Kamrul Islam, and Abdul Alim.

The prison authorities suspended the three jail guards after the incident due to negligence of duty, said Iqbal Kabir Chowdhury, senior jail super of Dhaka Central Jail.

Prison officials said that Mintu fell ill in Tangail jail two weeks ago and then he was shifted to the central jail in Keraniganj.

He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 12 but was taken back to the jail on August 13 after recovery.

Earlier on August 6, Abu Bakar Siddique, a life-term convict, escaped from Kashimpur Central Jail-2 in Gazipur and is yet to be found.
