Mohammedan raise objections over BPL fixtures, demand dissolution of league committee
On Sunday night, Mohammedan’s Director-in-Charge Kazi Firoz Rashid sent a letter to BFF President Tabith Awal outlining their grievances.
The 2025–26 season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) football kicks off on 26 September. Ahead of the new campaign, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) announced the fixtures on Sunday night — but reigning champions Mohammedan Sporting Club have raised objections.
Not only that, the club has also demanded the dissolution of BFF's Professional League Committee. On Sunday night, Mohammedan's Director-in-Charge Kazi Firoz Rashid sent a letter to BFF President Tabith Awal outlining their grievances.
In the letter, Mohammedan wrote: "The fixture format for the upcoming season, drawn up without any discussion, seems flawed and inconsistent. We expect a transparent, approved and acceptable fixture format." The letter further demanded: "In the interest of the country's football development, it is necessary to reorganise or dissolve the current league committee and form a neutral, acceptable and practical football-friendly committee."
However, Zakir Hossain, Deputy Chairman of the Professional League Committee, responded: "It would have been better if the club representative was invited. But there is no rule that fixtures must be finalised only after informing the clubs."
Traditionally, the champion team would play its first match against the bottom-placed side from the previous season, with the rest following in order. But for the past two seasons, fixtures have been set using software. As a result, champions have had to play their opening game against the sixth- or seventh-placed team from the previous campaign.
For example, last season champions Bashundhara Kings played their first match against Chattogram Abahani, who had finished seventh. This time, defending champions Mohammedan have been scheduled to play their opening fixture against Fortis FC, who finished sixth last season.
