The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched a nationwide inquiry into alleged financial irregularities involving Tk4,000 crore spent during Mujib Borsho, the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The anti-graft watchdog has issued letters to all 64 districts, requesting detailed financial records related to the celebrations, which included the construction of over 10,000 murals and sculptures of Sheikh Mujib.

Confirming the move yesterday, ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain (Prevention) said the step was taken following complaints of large-scale misappropriation and waste of public funds.

The funds were allegedly spent under projects associated with ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and other prominent figures during Mujib Borsho commemorations.

To investigate the matter, the ACC has formed a seven-member inquiry team, headed by a deputy director.

The letters to the district councils emphasised the urgency of the matter, urging officials to submit attested copies of all relevant documents without delay.

"You are kindly requested to take necessary measures and issue appropriate instructions to the concerned officials to urgently supply attested photocopies of the relevant records. This matter is of utmost urgency. The inquiry is constrained by time limitations," the ACC stated in its letter.

The commission has asked for full details of total project expenditures, names and designations of officials involved, disbursed amounts, and the responsible ministries or agencies.

The ACC also asked for a district-wise breakdown of the number of murals constructed, their locations, individual construction costs, and the officials responsible for overseeing those works.
