Mujibism must be crushed, Sarjis tells Jamaat rally

Though it has been close to a year since the July uprising, Mujibism remains prevalent in the country, and it needs to be eradicated, National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Sarjis Alam has said.

He made the remarks at the rally of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at Suhrawardy Udyan today (19 July).

Addressing as a guest, Sarjis, chief organiser of the NCP North unit, referred to the recent violence in Gopalganj, where he said Mujibism remains rooted.

Noting that Bangladesh will not be allowed to be dominated by any country other than the pro-Bangladesh nations, the NCP leader said, "We must keep alive the freedom that we gained on 5 August."

Sarjis added, "We want the interim government to carry out the duties it is meant to undertake as a government established in the aftermath of a mass uprising."

He said the verdict against ousted prime minister Hasina, who is accused of killings, must be implemented and made visible.

The NCP leader further stated that they oppose the politics of vengeance, and advocate for competitive politics.

In his speech, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said the much-anticipated July Charter must be declared.

He also urged all political forces, including those of an Islamic nature, to adopt a stance against fascism.

The NCP member secretary further called upon the government to ensure that the trial involving the July killings is made visible, and to progress towards the national election by ensuring a level-playing field.

Alongside Sarjis and Akhtar, representatives from several political parties, including the Gono Odhikar Parishad, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Khelafat Majlish, Jonotar Odhikar Party, among others, also attended Jamaat's rally as guests.

Jamaat has organised the rally to press home a seven-point demand, including introducing a proportional representation (PR) electoral system in Bangladesh, and justice for the killings committed during the past government.
