BNP to work on US tariff issue: Amir Khasru
We will extend coordinated support to the government in tackling the impact of this new tariff, he says

BNP will actively engage on the issue of the recently imposed 35% US tariffs on Bangladeshi exports, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said today (15 July).
"We will extend coordinated support to the government in tackling the impact of this new tariff," the BNP leader told the reporters after a meeting with business leaders at the Hotel Sarina in the capital's Banani.
Khasru said, "This is not just about $8 billion in exports; there are 1.5 to 1.6 million jobs tied to it. This is a serious economic issue. If we fail to respond properly, the entire economy, employment, and industries may suffer."
He added that the party has taken exporters' concerns into account and emphasised that addressing the tariff challenge will require united efforts. "No single entity can solve this alone. We must come together for the sake of the country's future economy and people's livelihoods."
Khasru also noted that security and political concerns are often linked to tariff policies. "We must preserve relations with all nations while protecting national interest. BNP will advise the government to take proactive steps. The negotiation window has not yet closed."
He warned, "If our tariff is higher than that of India or Vietnam, our exports will be at a serious disadvantage. We must act collectively to prevent that."
He also hinted at underlying policy and security dimensions behind the tariff changes, adding, "We are not fully aware of all the factors yet, but we are not in favour of losing such a major market like the United States.
"The consequences could be severe for both our economy and people's quality of life. BNP is ready to cooperate with the government for a comprehensive solution."
