Police have arrested former councillor Rasheduzzaman Jewel Mandal, an accused in a student murder case linked to the anti-discrimination student movement in Gazipur.

Mandal, an Awami League leader from Gacha thana and former councillor of Ward-37 of Gazipur City Corporation, was apprehended by Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) on Monday night (7 July), from the Demra area of Dhaka.

Gacha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam confirmed that the arrest was made based on a tip-off. A DB team conducted a raid in Demra and later handed Jewel Mandal over to Gacha police.

According to police, Mandal is a named accused in multiple cases filed over the deadly attack on student protesters during the 2024 July mass uprising. Two murder cases against him are currently under investigation at Gacha Police Station.

OC Aminul Islam added that Mandal had gone into hiding following the fall of the Awami League government. For investigative purposes, police sought a 10-day remand and presented him before court on Tuesday, after which he was ordered to be sent to jail.
