A student of Chattogram University died and two others went missing after being swept away by strong waves while bathing at Himchari Beach in Cox's Bazar this morning (8 July).

The deceased has been identified as Sadman Rahman Sabbab, 21, son of KM Anisur Rahman of Pallabi, Mirpur in Dhaka.

The missing students are Aritra Hasan, son of Aminul Islam from Dakshin Sonsonia village in Bogura, and Asif Ahmed, son of Rafiqul Islam from Naruli Dakshin in Bogura Sadar.

All three were students of the Development Studies Department at Chattogram University from the 2023–24 session.

Additional Deputy Inspector General of Tourist Police Apel Mahmud confirmed the incident.

"The body of a student named Sabbab has been recovered. Search operations are ongoing to locate the other two students," he said.

According to Imtiaz Ahmed, an official of SeaSafe lifeguard organisation, five friends had travelled to Cox's Bazar for a trip and visited Himchari Beach in the morning. Two of them stayed on the embankment while the other three entered the sea to bathe.

"They were swept away by strong waves. The body of Sadman Rahman Sabbab was later recovered, but the other two are still missing," said Imtiaz Ahmed.

He added that the sea had been rough due to rain and inclement weather. Fire Service personnel, Tourist Police, and lifeguards are continuing search and rescue operations.
