A local BNP leader died after sustaining injuries in a machete attack in the Tajmahal Road area of Mohammadpur in Dhaka.

The deceased, Md Mintu, 25, was the treasurer of the BNP's Ward-29 unit No. 3 wing.

Two individuals, Md Jalal and Nilufa Akhter, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Citing police sources, Prothom Alo reported that Mintu and two others were attacked with machetes on Monday morning. After receiving first aid from hospital, Mintu returned home but later fell ill again.

He was admitted to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases at night and died around dawn.

Mohammadpur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Hafizur Rahman told Prothom Alo that Mintu seemed to have suffered minor injuries at first. However, the cause of death will be confirmed after an autopsy.

Following the incident, Mintu's wife, Tulu Akhter, filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station. According to the case statement, Mintu was returning home on a motorcycle after attending a BNP programme at Mohammadpur Town Hall around 11:30am. He was accompanied by two associates, Tuhin Jamadar and Zahirul Islam.

On reaching Tajmahal Road, they noticed a commotion and Mintu approached an acquaintance to inquire about it. At that point, Mintu and his associates were attacked.
