Legal proceedings against the arrested suspects are underway.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two individuals, including the prime suspect, in connection with a case filed over the attempted murder of a teenager in the capital's Mohammadpur area today (7 February).
The arrestees are Md Alif Mridha, 19, the main accused in the case; and Md Miraj, 18.
"RAB-2 arrested them during a special drive in the Tajmahal Road and Chand Uddan areas of Mohammadpur. Acting on information provided by them, RAB also recovered a machete used in the attack," said Md Shamsul Islam, senior assistant director (media) of RAB-2.
Legal proceedings against the arrested suspects are underway, he added.
According to RAB sources, the incident occurred around 1:50pm on 6 February, when Deen Islam, 17, and his friend Shanto, 15, were returning home after offering Jummah prayers at Baitun Noor Jame Mosque in Mohammadpur.
At the time, Alif Mridha, Miraj and several others were reportedly chasing another youth while armed with machetes. An argument broke out after Alif Mridha bumped into Deen Islam.
The situation quickly escalated, and the assailants allegedly attacked Deen Islam indiscriminately, causing severe bleeding injuries to different parts of his body.
Alif Mridha allegedly struck him with a sharp machete below the neck with the intent to kill, while Miraj reportedly stabbed him in the middle of his back, leaving his spinal bone exposed.
Two other accused, identified as Mohon and Azgar, also allegedly attacked Deen Islam with sharp weapons, injuring him on the left side of his back.
After he fell to the ground bleeding, the attackers allegedly continued to assault him with kicks and punches before fleeing the scene.
Following the incident, the victim's father filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station on charges of attempted murder.
