Govt issues gazette recognising 10 more martyrs of July uprising

The government has officially recognised 10 more individuals as martyrs of the July uprising by publishing their names in a gazette issued yesterday (30 June) by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.

Earlier on 15 January, the government released a gazette listing the names of 834 martyrs.

With the latest addition, the total number of officially recognised martyrs of the July Uprising now stands at 844.

The newly published gazette includes details such as each martyr's name, gazette number, medical case ID, parents' names, current and permanent addresses, district, and division.

In addition to a one-time financial assistance of Tk3 million for each martyr's family, the government has launched a program to provide priority in public employment to family members and to support their rehabilitation.

The July Uprising began last year when students, under the banner of Students Against Discrimination, launched protests demanding reforms to the quota system in government jobs.

As the movement intensified, the government issued a circular on 23 July 2024 revising the quota policy—allocating 7% of positions under the quota system and 93% based on merit.

However, the student protesters escalated their demands into a call for the government's resignation.

The movement culminated in the fall of the government on 5 August 2024.
