Nasir-Tamima marriage fraud case: Court sets 14 July for self-defence hearing

A Dhaka court has set 14 July for the self-defence hearing of cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima Sultana, in a case alleging that the two married while Tamima was still legally married to another man.

The order was issued by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain this morning (1 July), following a hearing in which the accused sought more time.

The court had originally scheduled the day for hearing the statements of the accused under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

However, defence lawyers requested a deferral, citing Tamima's inability to appear due to work obligations. The court granted the request and fixed a new date.

Rakib Hasan filed the case on 24 February 2021 with the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court, claiming Tamima married Nasir while still being legally married to him.

On 30 September that year, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Inspector Sheikh Md Mizanur Rahman submitted a report finding three people, including Nasir and Tamima, guilty.

Charges were formally framed against Nasir and Tamima on 24 January the following year. Tamima's mother, Sumi Akter, who was also initially accused in the case, was acquitted at that stage.

Testimony recording in the trial concluded on 16 April this year, with the court hearing statements from 10 witnesses.

Nasir Hossain was present in court during today's hearing. Tamima, however, was absent due to her work commitments.

The next hearing is now scheduled for 14 July.
