A Dhaka court has granted a four-day fresh remand for ex-chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in connection with a case filed with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid passed the order today (27 June), according to court sources.

Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarkar, the investigation officer of the case, submitted a petition seeking a 10-day remand for the former CEC to facilitate further investigation.

However, defence lawyer Md Obaidul Islam filed a bail petition on behalf of the accused and requested the court to reject the remand plea.

Earlier on 23 June, a Dhaka court placed Nurul Huda on a four-day remand in the same case over election manipulation.

On 22 June, police detained Nurul Huda from his residence in the capital's Uttara area.

The detention came just hours after a case was filed by the BNP with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, accusing 24 people, including former chief election commissioners, election commissioners and other officials involved in irregularities and biased conduct during the 10th, 11th and 12th national elections.
