The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has appointed Supreme Court senior lawyer A Y Moshiuzzaman as an amicus curiae to ensure transparency in the ongoing contempt of court proceedings against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The order was issued today (19 June) by a three-member tribunal headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuja Majumder. The other members of the tribunal are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

Earlier, on 3 June, the tribunal had scheduled the hearing for today. The other accused in the case is Shakil Akand Bulbul, 40, also known as Md Shakil Alam, from Gobindaganj in Gaibandha.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tazul Islam filed the contempt charges against Sheikh Hasina and Shakil Akand Bulbul based on a viral audio clip in which Hasina reportedly claimed, "We've got a license to kill 226 people."

At a hearing on 30 April, the tribunal ordered both accused to appear before the court on 25 May and explain their statements.

However, neither of them appeared nor submitted an explanation through legal representatives. The tribunal then directed that a public notice be published in newspapers, summoning them to respond to the allegations on 3 June.

The notices were published the following day in two newspapers, instructing the accused to appear before the tribunal and provide an explanation.
