NCP, Chinese envoy hold talks on Bangladesh's democratic transition, reform process

The National Citizens' Party (NCP) held a "constructive and forward-looking" discussion with Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen today (5 June), centring on the country's ongoing democratic reforms and transitional political landscape.

The meeting, held at the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka following a formal invitation, was led by NCP Convenor Nahid Islam and attended by senior party representatives. Discussions covered key issues of national and international interest regarding Bangladesh's evolving political dynamics.

In the meeting, the NCP delegation presented their vision for an inclusive democratic transition and highlighted structural challenges impacting political stability.

"National Citizens' Party strongly believes that a sustainable democratic path can only be built on public aspirations and structural reform," said Nahid Islam, stressing the urgent need to formulate and publish the 'July Charter' before an election date is announced.

"This charter is not merely a policy document but a moral obligation to those who sacrificed their lives in the July Movement dreaming of change," he added.

He emphasised that the July Charter would lay a definitive foundation for electoral reform, judicial independence, and inclusive political participation, and serve as a guiding roadmap for the future of politics in Bangladesh.

Nahid also reiterated NCP's call for a truly independent and non-partisan Election Commission, essential to restoring public trust in the democratic process. He called for a local government election followed by a constituent assembly and parliamentary election to ensure inclusive representation and institutional accountability.

Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen welcomed the NCP delegation's vision for state-building and expressed appreciation for their thoughtful engagement.

He reiterated China's longstanding policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations and reaffirmed China's continued support for Bangladesh's socio-economic development.

The envoy stressed the importance of consistent and constructive dialogue among political stakeholders and highlighted the vital role of young people in shaping Bangladesh's future.

The meeting was also attended by NCP Joint Convenor Mahbub Alam and Joint Member Secretary Tahsin Riaz. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to promoting democracy and long-term development based on mutual understanding, respectful dialogue, and strategic cooperation.

The NCP expressed sincere gratitude for the warm hospitality and open-minded approach shown by the Chinese Embassy during the meeting.
