Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque has asked the officials concerned to visit the flood-affected areas and to monitor the implementation of the stimulus package to make up for the losses suffered by farmers.

He gave the order at a post-Eid-ul-Azha meeting with the senior officials of the agriculture ministry on Tuesday morning.

"The farmers are living in uncertainty due to the ongoing flood. The officials must work for the agriculture rehabilitation programme and to curb the losses on an emergency basis when the water recedes," said Dr Razzaque.

He said 14 committees have been formed to speed up, supervise and coordinate the implementation of the stimulus package that includes the distribution of seeds and fertilisers.

He also said the agriculture ministry officials outside these committees have to monitor these works regularly. They have to supervise the field level work by coordinating activities of every agency at the ministry.

If the ministry officials visit the flood-affected areas to observe the situation and monitor the activities of the stimulus package, these works can be done swiftly and the losses due to the flood can be reined in, said the minster.

The ministry has launched a stimulus package to continue uninterrupted food production and to compensate the vegetables and Aman paddy farmers in 38 districts for their losses.

The fourteen committees have started working to coordinate the programme.

Sources said the ministry has been running a programme to prepare community seedbeds at elevated lands of the farmers or of the Agriculture Training Institutes to supply seeds and seedlings to farmers in the flood-affected areas on time.
