Police have recovered the body of a seven-year-old student who was found dead on Tuesday (13 May) in the bathroom of Al-Muin Islami Academy, a madrasah in Lakshmipur.

The deceased has been identified as Sanim Hossain (7), a student of the Hefz department of the institution.

Visiting the scene, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Rezaul Haque and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Model Police Station Abdul Monnaf found his body at 6:30pm and sent it to the sadar hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, the police also detained Mahmudur Rahman, a teacher of the madrasah, for questioning over the incident after allegations surfaced that he had brutally beaten the child, who reportedly died earlier in the afternoon.

ASP Rezaul said, "We came after receiving the news of the death of a madrasah student by suicide.

"There were dark marks on his neck and various parts of his body. The real cause of his death will be known after receiving the autopsy report," he added.

The family of the deceased claimed that he died after being beaten by his teacher, Mahmudur Rahman.

His cousin Bakshi Md Shahid Hossain said about 3-4 days ago, they were informed of some behavioural issues with the teacher. "His hujoor [teacher] was angry with him for this."

"This afternoon, we were told that he went into the bathroom and hanged himself," he said, adding that upon reaching the madrasah, they found his body lying on a bed in a room.

"He was murdered. We want justice for his murder," he said.

Some of the classmates of the deceased alleged he had been beaten up by teacher Mahmudur in the morning.

CCTV footage showed the child entering the bathroom with a towel, but he was not seen coming out. Teachers reportedly brought his body out of the bathroom on the third floor to the ground floor. However, the authorities could not show footage of that, reports our correspondent.

Commenting on the matter, Al-Muin Islami Academy Principal Bashir Ahmed said, "Everyone gets a break for prayers and food after class. After prayers, everyone goes to eat. But the child did not. CCTV shows him entering the bathroom with a towel. His body was recovered from there."
