The recently banned Awami League leader and Suchinta Foundation's Chattogram divisional coordinator Zeenat Sohana Chowdhury has been sent to jail in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin issued the order today (13 May), following her arrest on Monday night from a residence in the city's Bayezid Bostami area.

Zeenat Sohana was detained by Bayezid Bostami police and produced before the court today.

Confirming the matter, Chattogram Metropolitan Police's Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mofiz Uddin said, "She was presented before the court in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. As per the court's direction, she has been sent to jail."

Zeenat Sohana is also named in another case filed over a violent clash that took place on 26 November 2024, in the Chattogram court area between police and followers of Chinmoy Krishna Brahmachari, a former Iskcon leader.

Zeenat gained prominence in Chattogram during the tenure of the previous government. She became a notable figure after organising events in madrasas where she promoted patriotism by leading renditions of the national anthem under the banner of the Suchinta Foundation, a platform known for its pro-government advocacy.

Currently, she serves as the legal affairs secretary of the North District Women's Awami League, in addition to her role as the divisional coordinator of the Suchinta Foundation.

During the ousted Awami League-led government, she was also a board member of the Chattogram Development Authority. Zeenat is the chairperson of Farmine Group, a RMG industry entity, and a member of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

Her husband, Mohammad Imran, is also politically connected, serving as the president of the Florida Awami League in the United States. He was previously the joint general secretary of the now-defunct Chhatra League unit at Chittagong University.
