1 killed, 40 injured as torch-wielding rival groups clash in Faridpur

A man was killed and at least 40 others were injured in a violent clash between two rival groups in the Makrrompatti area of Gharua Union under Bhanga Upazila in Faridpur last night (4 May).

The clash, which erupted over establishing dominance in the area, took place between supporters of Bajlu Munshi and Dabir Matubbor.

The deceased, identified as Kuddus Molla, 50, was reportedly a supporter of the Bajlu Munshi group.

According to locals and police sources, tensions flared after Miraj Member, a former union parishad member and supporter of Bajlu Munshi, recently switched allegiance to the Dabir Matubbor group.

Yesterday evening, the Dabir Matubbor group arranged a "khichuri feast" to celebrate Miraj's joining, which led to a heated exchange between members of the two groups. The situation escalated, and by nightfall, both sides engaged in a fierce clash, using torchlights to spot rivals in the dark.

Gharua Union Chairman Monsur Ahmed said, "The fight started when Bajlu Munshi's supporters protested the feast organised by the Dabir group. It turned violent, and Bajlu's follower Kuddus Molla was killed during the clash. At least 40 others were injured."

He added that despite the arrival of four to five police vehicles, the law enforcers failed to control the situation. Eventually, the army was deployed to restore order.

Dr Tansiv Zubayer Nadim of Bhanga Upazila Health Complex said, "Several injured people were brought to the hospital last night. One of them, Kuddus

Molla, died from a fatal stab wound to his throat. Others are receiving treatment."

Confirming the incidents, Bhanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ashraf Hossain said, "The situation is currently under control. Additional police forces have been deployed, and legal action is underway."
