The government has declared a three-day state mourning following the death of Pope Francis, the Head of the Catholic Church and the State of the Vatican City.

According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division yesterday (23 April), the mourning period will be observed from Thursday to Saturday.

During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions, as well as in all educational institutions across the country.

The flag will also be lowered at all government and private buildings, along with Bangladesh missions abroad.

Special prayers will be offered across the country for the repose of Pope Francis' soul.

Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus will travel to Rome from Doha on Friday (25 April) to attend the Pope's funeral and pay his last respects to a global symbol of peace, humanity, and unity.

Pope Francis' funeral will be held on Saturday (26 April), following three days of public viewing at St Peter's Basilica starting Wednesday (23 April).

The faithful are expected to gather in large numbers to pay tribute to the first Latin American pontiff in history.
