A group of Jahangirnagar University (JU) students have begun a hunger strike in solidarity with the protesting students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet), demanding the withdrawal of Kuet Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Mashud.
The JU students started their hunger strike under the banner of Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad JU Unit around 11:45am today (23 April).
Visiting the spot in the afternoon, our correspondent found that a total of eight students have participated in the hunger strike at the Mohua Chattar of the university.
The students who have participated in the hunger strike are- Touhid Mohammad Siam, Arifuzzaman Ujjal, Ziauddin Ayan, Nazmul Hasan Limon, Jannatul Ferdous Anjum, Mehrab Hossain Turjo, Nahid Hasan Emon and Sajjad Hossain.
Ziauddin Ayan, joint member secretary of Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad's central committee, said, "We have begun our hunger strike in solidarity with Kuet students."
"The students participating in the hunger strike are becoming sick and going to hospitals, but the interim government is not waking up from its slumber. The government, which came to power by walking over the bodies, is committing treachery with the students," Ayan said.
"We want to make it clear. If VC Mashud is not removed by 3pm, we will call for a blockade all over the country. We will take positions on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway and carry on with our hunger strike," Ayan added.
Touhid Mohammad Siam, senior joint convener of the Sangsad's central committee, said, "We feel that the government has lost its legitimacy when we see our student adviser in the advisory council to remain silent on issues regarding the students. If anything bad happens to the students on Kuet issue, that will be the last day of the interim government."
Arifuzzaman Ujjal, convener of Sangsad's JU unit, said, "The interim government, which came to power based on the blood of the students, is not paying heed to the students' demands. We will block the Dhaka-Aricha Highway as part of our Bangladesh blockade programme if VC Mashud is not withdrawn within 3pm today."
On 21 April, 32 Kuet students started hunger strike demanding the removal of their VC, some of whom have become sick.
