MS Dhoni returns as CSK captain for IPL 2025 after Gaikwad injury blow

MS Dhoni is set to return as captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season following a major injury setback to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been ruled out with a fractured elbow.

Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news on 10 April, the day before CSK's home clash against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Gaikwad, 28, suffered a blow to his elbow from Tushar Deshpande during CSK's match against Rajasthan Royals on 30 March. Despite playing in the following two matches against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, further scans have now confirmed a fracture.

"Unfortunately, Ruturaj Gaikwad is going to be ruled out of the tournament," said Fleming. "He got hit in Guwahati. He's been playing through pain. The initial X-ray was inconclusive, but an MRI has now revealed a fracture, so we're disappointed for him."

He added, "We appreciate his commitment and efforts to continue playing, but it's time to prioritise his recovery. MS Dhoni, our uncapped player, will take over as captain for the rest of the IPL."

The injury is a significant blow for the five-time champions, who have made a poor start to their 2025 campaign with just one win from five matches. Gaikwad's absence will leave a noticeable gap at the top of the order — he has been the franchise's leading run-scorer in three of the last four seasons.

Now, the leadership baton passes once again to 43-year-old Dhoni, who steps back into a role he held for the majority of CSK's illustrious history. Dhoni had briefly handed over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja in 2022, but resumed control midway through that season. He stepped down again before the 2024 edition, but returns now with the team needing a turnaround.

"He understands the need of the moment," said Fleming. "Rutu didn't want to step away, but he had no choice. MS had no hesitation in stepping up and leading us again. There was never any doubt."

Fleming also addressed the possibility of replacing Gaikwad in the squad. "We'll look within the squad first. We've got players who've been with us a while, so we'll assess internally before looking outside. There's also an opportunity to consider building for the future," he noted.

Dhoni has captained CSK in 235 of their 268 IPL matches, guiding them to unparalleled consistency and success. Under his leadership, the franchise has won five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023) and two Champions League T20 trophies. The team has only finished outside the top four twice — in 2020 and 2022 — and has reached the IPL final on a record 10 occasions, including four successive appearances from 2010 to 2013.
