Will Mustafizur get compensation after KKR release?
Mustafizur’s predicament has raised the issue of a player’s rights, especially since he neither voluntarily pulled out of the competition nor was accused of any wrongdoing
Questions have emerged over whether Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman will receive any financial compensation after being released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on the instructions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), despite having no role in the circumstances that led to the termination of his contract.
Mustafizur was bought by KKR for Rs9.20 crore at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction after competitive bidding from Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. However, the BCCI did not specify the reasons behind its decision, stating only that it was necessitated by "the developments all around," without further clarification.
Mustafizur's predicament has raised the issue of a player's rights, especially since he neither voluntarily pulled out of the competition nor was accused of any wrongdoing.
News agency PTI reported today (6 January), citing unnamed sources, that the existing insurance framework leaves little scope for compensation in such cases.
"The salaries of all IPL players are insured. For foreign international players, the franchise normally pays if the player is injured after joining the camp or during the course of the tournament," a source was quoted as saying.
According to the report, Mustafizur's situation does not fall under standard insurance clauses. Since his release was not due to injury or any cricket-related reason linked to participation in the IPL, KKR are not contractually obliged to pay him any compensation.
"In case of an insurance claim, the current situation is not covered. Therefore, KKR are under no official obligation to pay a penny," PTI quoted the sources as saying.
