A farmer was beaten to death allegedly by a group of youths after he tried to prevent them from stealing his watermelons in Barishal.

The victim, Kuddus Howlader, 45, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital this morning (4 April).

Enamul Haque Shaheed, in-charge of Charamaddi Police Outpost in Bakerganj, said the attack occurred yesterday in the Diyar Char area of Ranirhat, Bakerganj upazila.

The deceased was the son of Abdur Razzak Howlader from the same area.

According to SI Enamul Haque, several individuals from the neighbouring Charadi area were caught stealing watermelons from Kuddus's field. When Kuddus tried to stop them, the miscreants attacked him with sticks from a nearby tree, leaving him critically injured.

"No written complaint has been received yet, police are conducting an investigation. The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy," the SI said.
