Measles symptoms claim another child in Barishal, cases cross 1,500
165 new patients admitted in last 24 hours
A six-month-old child has died with measles symptoms in Barishal division, raising the death toll to 17.
Total cases with measles symptoms have now crossed 1,500, according to the Barishal Divisional Health Office.
In the last 24 hours, 165 new patients have been admitted to hospitals with measles symptoms.
Among the new admissions, 29 were admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and one in the Barishal City Corporation area. Patuakhali, Bhola and Pirojpur each reported 11 new patients, while Barguna reported 23. No new cases were identified in Jhalakathi during this period.
Of those admitted to government hospitals, 86 have been confirmed as measles cases, while 79 are awaiting test results.
The highest number of deaths has been reported at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where eight children have died. Two children from Barishal district, three from Barguna, two from Jhalakathi and two from Bhola have also died.
A total of 927 patients have recovered after receiving treatment, according to the Barishal Divisional Health Office.
Divisional Director of the Directorate General of Health Services, Dr Shyamal Krishna Mondal, said instructions have been given to prioritise treatment of measles cases.
"We are monitoring the situation in different areas daily," he said.
He said there is no shortage of measles vaccines in the division and vaccination is ongoing through campaigns. However, hospitals are struggling due to the high number of patients.
