A readymade garment (RMG) factory in Narayanganj granted an extended 10-day leave on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr to workers today (27 March), Industrial Police officials said.
Authorities of Russel Garments in Naraynganj agreed to grant the extended holidays following a three-hour protest by the workers, Industrial Police-4 Superintendent Selim Badshah confirmed to The Business Standard.
"Russel Garments workers protested today for an extended leave. Their demand for a 10-day leave has been accepted after discussions with the owner," he said.
During the protest, the workers blocked the SM Maleh Road in the city this afternoon, halting vehicular movement for three hours.
According to police and witnesses, the workers started the protest at around 11:00am inside the factory. At around 12:00pm, they came out and blocked the SM Maleh Road and refused to move despite several requests from the police.
Later, a discussion took place between the factory authorities and the protesters, and the parties agreed on a 10-day leave.
Nasir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, said the workers left the road by 3:00pm after the factory authorities accepted their demand for leave.
Currently, traffic on the road is normal.
