Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam yesterday (11 March) called for cooperation with the police, emphasising the need for stability in the country.

In a post on his verified Facebook profile, Mahfuj said, "In the past few days, the police have arrested the accused in harrasment and rape cases. The accused in the Banani mugging incident have been arrested because the police have been active.

"Army members are also in the field. But they too cannot maintain law and order alone without the police. If the police are not fully active, there is a possibility that complications will continue in getting citizen services and security."

Mahfuj's remarks come as a group of protesters locked into a clash with the police yesterday when they were on their way to submit a memorandum to Chief Adviser (CA) Muhammad Yunus as part of their ongoing anti-rape protests.

The adviser wrote, "The government has taken initiatives against rape and oppression of women, and the government is sincere about what other initiatives can be taken. However, the responsibility lies with the pro-uprising forces to ensure that a civil movement does not become a sanctuary for anti-uprising conspirators.

"Don't fall into any traps. Attempts to create instability or mobs cannot be allowed to continue."
