Writ petition challenges legality of speaker administering oath to president
It seeks a directive that the chief justice should administer the oath to the president

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court today (10 March), challenging the legality of the speaker of the National Parliament administering the oath to the president of the country.
The petition also seeks a directive that the chief justice should administer the oath to the president.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Omar Faruk filed the writ petition on behalf of lyricist and constitutional analyst Shahidullah Farazi.
Barrister Faruk told reporters that the petition names the secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs and other relevant officials as respondents.
"Under Bangladesh's original constitution, the president was sworn in by the chief justice. However, a later amendment introduced the provision allowing the speaker to administer the oath to the president.
"The petition argues that just as the president administers the oath to the chief justice, the chief justice should also administer the oath to the president," the lawyer said.
