Sagar-Runi murder: HC grants 6 more months for report as AG says investigation in 'final stage'
The High Court has granted six more months to complete the investigation into the 2012 murder case of the journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi.
Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal informed the High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice AFM Saiful Karim today (26 April) that the investigation is in its final stage, though additional time is required for completion.
Senior lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir heard the writ petition in the court.
On the night of 11 February 2012, journalist couple Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered in their rented house in West Rajabazar of the capital.
As of 1 April this year, the probe report for the sensational murder case was delayed for the 125th time since the case began.
Earlier on 23 October 2025, the High Court gave the high-level task force committee six months to submit the investigation report into the murder case.
The court said this was the last time that extension has been given and that the investigation report must be submitted within these six months.
The High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Fatema Anwar issued this order.
On 22 April 2025, the High Court gave six months to submit the investigation report.
On 24 October 2025, a four-member high-level task force committee was formed with the PBI chief as the convener to investigate the case.
The committee included a representative of the police not below the rank of additional DIG, a representative of the CID, and a representative of the RAB.
On 15 October last year, the Public Security Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification forming the task force.
On 30 September 2024, the High Court ordered the formation of a high-level task force. They were asked to complete the investigation within six months.
The home ministry was asked to implement this directive. A task force was asked to be formed with experienced investigation officers from various forces.
The High Court bench passed this order after hearing the application of the state.
Earlier, a supplementary application was filed to remove RAB from the investigation. This application was filed by the state.
On 29 September 2024, a new lawyer was appointed in the case. Eminent criminal law expert Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir was appointed as the lawyer.
