Probe report in Sagar-Runi murder delayed for 125th time
This is the 125th time extension for sumitting the report as the investigation has been delayed since the case began
A Dhaka court here today (1 April) fixed 7 May for submitting the investigation report in the sensational murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
This is the 125th time extension for sumitting the report as the investigation has been delayed since the case began.
The report was scheduled to be submitted today (1 April), but the investigation officer failed to do so.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam set a new date for filing of the report, said police Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam Russell, officer of the general registration branch of the court for Mirpur Model Police Station.
The journalist couple was brutally murdered at their rented flat in the city's West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012, in the presence of their four-year-old son Mahir Sarwar Megh.
Runi's brother Nawser Alam filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
At that time, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) was entrusted with the charge for investigation into the case, which was later transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
RAB failed to submit the investigation report even after taking time 111 times over the past 12 years.
On 30 September, 2024, the High Court ordered Ministry of Home Affairs for formation of a high-power task force to probe the case, removing RAB from the charge.
On 23 October, 2024, the Home Ministry formed a four-member taskforce as per court order to investigate the double murder and submit its findings within six months.
