Police in Sylhet today (2 March) arrested Joydeep Chowdhury Madhab, a Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal leader, who was accused of abducting two street vendors for refusing to pay extortion money.
Mohammad Saiful Islam, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, told The Business Standard that Madhab was arrested from Sunamganj's Shantiganj Upazila.
He said, "Yesterday, one of the abducted victims, Kajol Mia, filed a case at the city's Kotwali Model Police Station against Madhab and seven-eight others."
"According to the case document, the accused abducted Kajol near the District Council, took Tk16,500 from him, and later demanded an additional Tk30,000 as extortion," the officer added.
Yesterday, after allegations surfaced that Madhab, who was serving as the assistant organisational secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan Jubo Dal, kidnapped two street vendors, he was expelled from the party.
Following this, in a Facebook post, Madhab denied the allegations and claimed that certain individuals had been extorting money from vendors using his name.
He also alleged that several top leaders of the Sylhet BNP were receiving a share of this money.
Last night, hundreds of street vendors blocked Zindabazar road, alleging that Madhab had kidnapped two vendors for refusing to pay extortion.
Although police arrived at the scene, the situation remained unresolved, and the enraged vendors reportedly chased the officers away, forcing them to leave the area.
Upon receiving the news, Emdad Hossain Chowdhury, general secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP, rushed to the scene around 10pm and assured them that he would resolve the issue, and later the vendors lifted the blockade.
Subsequently, Madhab was expelled from the party late at night.
Confirming Madhab's expulsion, Sylhet Metropolitan Jubo Dal General Secretary Mirza Samrat Hossain said, "Jubo Dal will not tolerate any activities that violate party discipline."
