Kuet administration cuts off internet, water supply as students refuse to leave halls despite order

The Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) administration has cut off internet and water supply to its dormitories following the announcement of an indefinite closure yesterday (25 February) despite many students yet to vacate the halls.
In a visit to the campus today (26 February), The Business Standard found out that the Wi-Fi and water supply to Dr SM Rashid Hall were cut off.
Students on the campus have alleged that the university administration is trying to make them leave the dormitories to suppress their movement seeking the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Masud.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a student staying in the Dr SM Rashid hall, said, "Since we have declared the VC as unwanted, we are not accepting the decision of the syndicate under him. He pushed us into a three-hour war which the people have seen."
However, the VC Masud, said, "Those who have remained even after the halls were declared vacant, our provost, all my teachers are trying to make them understand."
"Efforts are being made to convince them to vacate halls through persuasion, not by force," he added.
Yesterday, a notice signed by the university's registrar, the administration instructed students to leave the residential halls by 10am today.
The notice also mentioned that all kinds of academic activities of the university will remain closed until further notice.
The announcement came hours after students tried to put a lock at the gate of VC's residence as part of their movement.
The demand for the VC's resignation started on 18 February following a clash between some "general students" and members of BNP's student wing Chhatra Dal and youth with Jatiotabadi Jubodal over banning student politics on the campus.
At least 30 students were injured in the clash that reportedly erupted over the distribution of Chhatra Dal's recruitment form. The violence escalated as local outsiders reportedly joined in the attacks on students.
Later an emergency syndicate meeting decided to suspend Kuet's academic activities until 28 February.
Meanwhile, on 23 February, a group of Kuet students met with Shabbir Ahmed, assistant personal secretary to the chief adviser, and submitted a memorandum to the chief adviser, presenting their six-point demands, including the removal of the vice-chancellor and ensuring a politics-free campus.
