Locals in Faridpur's Saltha upazila are living in fear due to a series of violent assaults carried out by a group locally called the Hammer Gang.

Incidents of brutal beatings with hammers have become alarmingly frequent, spreading panic among residents.

According to local sources, yesterday (3 February), a farmer named Sujon and a supporter of Krishak Dal Hiru Molla were attacked with hammers.

Earlier incidents include the assault of Ikram Matubbar, son of a freedom fighter, on 29 December, followed by attacks on Saifur Rahman Shawon on 7 January and Atik Sheikh on 31 January.

Despite the repeated attacks, many victims are reportedly too afraid to file complaints with the police.

Locals allege that there has been incidents of extortion schemes involving crores centring the murder of a youth named Kashem Bepari in the area.

While a case was filed by Farida Begum against the alleged extortionists, they remain at large, with some reportedly involved in the Hammer Gang.

Saltha upazila Krishak Dal General Secretary Iliyas Hossain described the situation as "deeply concerning," and added, "My uncle, Hiru Molla, a Krishak Dal supporter, was beaten on his back, hands, and legs. Some miscreants and Awami League activists, posing as BNP supporters, are behind these attacks. We urge the authorities to bring them to justice."

Superintendent of Faridpur Police Md Abdul Jalil assured, "Those involved in these hammer attacks will be identified and brought under the law. No one will be spared."
