A sudden storm struck parts of Alfadanga Upazila in Faridpur this morning (21 April), unleashing widespread destruction on homes and power infrastructure in the municipality and sadar union.

The swift but intense storm impacted villages such as Srirampur Kusumdi, Mithapur Dhaleichar, Shukur Hata, Brahmanjatigram, and Bidyadhar.

Residents recounted fierce winds and lightning that uprooted trees, ripped off roofs, and downed power lines in a matter of minutes.

Power infrastructure suffered significant damage, with two electric poles reported broken in the municipality, Dhaleichar, and Brahmanjatigram each.

In Brahmanjatigram, several houses were damaged due to the storm.

Sohanur Rahman, assistant general manager of Alfadanga Palli Bidyut Samity, confirmed that a total of four electric poles were toppled – two in the municipality and two in Sadar Union – causing widespread power disruption.

While electricity was restored to the municipality by 5:30pm, efforts to restore power in other affected areas are ongoing, he added.

Despite the severity of the storm, Upazila Agriculture Officer Tushar Saha reported minimal damage to cropland, stating that fallen rice grains remained harvestable.

Further assessments are underway, he said.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Russell Iqbal acknowledged the extensive damage and assured that relief efforts would be provided to affected families.

"Although an official programme prevented me from visiting the area, I have instructed upazila officials to assess the situation. The deputy commissioner has also been informed," he said.

Earlier in the day, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued a thunderstorm alert for multiple districts, warning of gusty or squally winds and lightning accompanied by rain.

The advisory, released this morning, forecasts temporary gusts reaching 45–60 kilometres per hour or more across several parts of the country.
