China is an important partner in our country's development, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said today (26 January).

"China's public and private initiatives in the development of the country's communication system and infrastructure, including roads, railways, and power plants, bear outstanding signs of the genuine friendship between the two countries," he said while speaking at a winter clothes and food distribution programme organised in Gazipur with the support of the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen was also present on the occasion.

The Jamaat chief said Bangladesh has a traditional relationship with China.

He urged the Chinese authorities to set up a higher academy on Chinese language in Bangladesh, "so that the next generations can build closer relations with China".

"China is one of the major countries in the world, which leads science and technology sectors from the frontline and we have a lot to learn and gain from them," he said.

Shafiqur thanked the Chinese ambassador, saying, "The journey of cooperation that began today will be strengthened further in the coming days."
