Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the party will not compromise on the voting rights of the expatriates.

"Voting arrangements must be made for expatriates. We are not willing to compromise on this matter," he said at a press conference, regarding the Appellate Division order restoring the party's registration, at a Dhaka hotel today (3 June).

Mentioning that expatriates now are unable to exercise their civil rights, Shafiqur said, "We have made a demand to the Election Commission (EC) to make arrangements so that expatriates can vote. This is not a difficult matter. But we are not seeing any progress from the EC's side."

Regarding elections, the Jamaat chief said the party demanded elections by mid-February or within April next year.

"Either before Ramadan, or if not possible for any reason, then the election should be held within April. Because due to weather conditions, it is not possible to hold elections after May," he added.

However, Shafiqur also said, "Even if a level playing field is created today, if a fair election is possible, we are still prepared. But if a fair election field is not created, then there is no benefit even if elections are held in April."
