Cumilla-4: Hasnat's candidacy upheld; BNP candidate Munshi's cancelled for loan default
The Election Commission (EC) has upheld the nomination of National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (Southern region) Hasnat Abdullah for the Cumilla-4 constituency, rejecting an appeal filed by BNP candidate Manjurul Ahsan Munshi.
The EC made the decision on the eighth day of the commission's appeal hearings. Munshi had filed an appeal challenging the validity of Hasnat's candidacy. The grounds for the appeal was the claim that the disclosed amount of Tk30 lakh shown brought through crowdfunding for election expenses was vague.
As the appeal was not accepted, the EC, during the appeal hearing, announced that Hasnat Abdullah's candidacy will remain valid.
On the other hand, BNP candidate Munshi's nomination has been cancelled. An appeal had been filed against him from Hasnat Abdullah's side on the grounds of loan default, which was accepted during the appeal hearing.
As a result, the nomination of the BNP candidate for the Cumilla-4 constituency has been cancelled.
Earlier, the High Court stayed the inclusion of BNP candidate Manjurul Ahsan Munshi's name in the loan defaulters' list for the Cumilla-4 constituency. The order was issued by a High Court bench led by Justice AKM Rabiul Hasan.
Subsequently, Premier Bank authorities filed an application with the chamber court seeking a stay on the High Court order.
