Independent journalism impossible amid job insecurity for journalists: GM Quader

It is impossible to foster independent journalism while the livelihood of journalists has become uncertain, Jatiya Party Chairman Golam Mohammad Quader said today (19 January).

In a statement, expressing deep concern over the recent widespread layoffs of journalists in Bangladesh, the Jatiya Party leader called for the reinstatement of the laid-off media workers.

Mentioning the Broadcast Journalists Center (BJC), he said over 150 television journalists have lost their jobs in recent months. Similarly, numerous journalists from print and online media have also been laid off.

"The loss of jobs has already created a humanitarian crisis in the families of media workers," Quader said, adding that the scale of these layoffs is unprecedented.

The Jatiya Party leader further stated, "Journalists in our country have never been able to practice journalism freely due to various pressures. As a result, objective and impartial news reporting is often hindered.

"It is the responsibility of media organisations to intervene in these matters and ensure the safety of journalists. It is inhumane and unjust to punish innocent journalists by laying them off," he added.

Quader also urged the government to investigate the matter.
