People lack confidence in govt: Debapriya
"There was an indication from the public that such a situation may arise even before anything happened," said Debapriya.
There is a lack confidence in the interim government regarding whether they will be able to ensure security for all, Debapriya Bhattacharya, a distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), said citing people's statements during various view-exchange meetings across the country.
People have reservations on whether law enforcement and the army will be able to provide security if any crisis arises, Debapriya said, adding that these opinions were expressed even before the death of Inqilab Mancha Spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
"There was an indication from the public that such a situation may arise even before anything happened," said the economist while speaking at a press conference and human chain in Dhaka, jointly organised by the Editors' Council and Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (Noab) today (22 December) held at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka, in protest against mob violence against mass media and other institutions across the country. Representatives of various businesses, social, political, and cultural organisations joined the programmes in solidarity.
He said there is a lack of security for all, including religious and ethnic minorities, anyone who has different opinions or even politicians.
So, protests are brewing in the country not only centring on politics and election but also culture and morality, said Debapriya.
