Police in Akhaura, Brahmanbaria, recovered the body of a woman this morning (24 December), who was burned to death after being thrown into a pit.

The incident occurred in the Gazirbazar area of the upazila.

Police suspect that the woman, identified as Harluja Begum, 50, from Akhaura's Hirapur village, was murdered in the early hours of the morning, and her body was burned afterwards.

In connection with the incident, a youth named Farhan Rony has been detained by the police. He is the son of Shahnewaz Bhuiyan, general secretary of the Akhaura South union Jubo League.

According to the police and local sources, at around 7am today, locals noticed smoke coming from an abandoned tin shed house in Shahnewaz Bhuiyan's residence.

They said two swans were stolen from Gazirbazar resident Enamul's house. While searching for the swans, Enamul and his brother Roman smelled something burning coming from an abandoned tin shed nearby.

Upon checking, they saw Rony burning something. However, Rony claimed that he was burning dry leaves from a tree.

Suspicious of this, they later discovered that a body was being burned there. The locals then detained him.

Akhaura Police Station's Inspector (Investigation), Shahinur Islam, said the severed head of the murdered woman was found on a plot of land near the scene based on Rony's information.

The head was used to identify the victim.

However, the exact motive behind the murder is still unclear. The police are interrogating Rony regarding the incident.
