Immigration activities and import-export have been halted through the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria due to waterlogging amid heavy downpours and hill torrents.

The import-export activities of goods have been disrupted due to the inundation of the port road. At the same time, passenger crossing activities are halted due to knee-deep water in the immigration building.

According to local sources, rainfall started today (21 August) at midnight in various places in Brahmanbaria and the land port road was already flooded in the morning.

Apart from the immigration office, several offices of importers and exporters along the land port road have also been submerged due to flooding.

Meanwhile, a bailey bridge over the Zajira Canal at Akhaura on the Akhaura-Agartala International Highway has been submerged under water, and traffic has been blocked, said Gazala Parvin, Akhaura upazila nirbahi officer (UNO).

Mahmudul Hasan, assistant director of Akhaura land port, said a few fish pickup vans arrived at the port in the morning. But big trucks could not come due to waterlogging.

As a result, the export activities are somewhat disrupted, he added.
