A Narayanganj court has granted police two days to interrogate the three accused in a case filed over the death of a Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student in a road accident at Purbachal under Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Nur Mohsin gave the order today (22 December) after a hearing, during which police had requested a five-day remand while the lawyer of the accused appealed for bail.

The judge rejected the bail plea and granted police a two-day remand, said Narayanganj court police In-Charge Kaiyum Khan.

Meanwhile, last night (21 December), Rupganj police station's Assistant Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan lodged a caser under the Narcotics Control Act 2018 against Mubin Al Mamun, 20, Mirajul Karim, 22, and Asif Chowdhury, 19.

Mubin and Mirajul were charged for consuming and carrying drugs, while Asif was charged for assisting them.

The first case was filed by deceased Muhtasim Masud's father Masud Mia against the trio under the Road Transport Act 2018 on Friday (20 December), several hours after the incident that took place at the Nila Market intersection on the 300-feet road in Purbachal in the early hours.

After today's hearing, the plaintiff's lawyer Sakhawat Hossain said the court sent the three accused into a two-day remand after a hearing on the Road Transport Act case.

Meanwhile, Muhtasim's family members, classmates and other Buet students demonstrated outside the Narayanganj court since the morning and carried out protests till the hearing ended.

They termed Muhtasim's death a murder and demanded justice for him.

Muhtasim, 22, a student of Buet's computer science and engineering department, and his two friends from the same department – Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan, 22, went to Nila Market on his motorcycle on Thursday night to have dinner. On their way back to Dhaka at around 3am Friday, they were stopped by the police at the checkpost at Nila Market intersection.

The three youths were on the stationary motorcycle and talking to the police when the car recklessly driven by Mubin crashed into them, killing Muhtasim on the spot and critically injuring his two friends.

After police and locals detained the car's three passengers – Mubin, Mirajul and Asif, an empty bottle of liquor and a can of beer were found in the vehicle – which raised suspicion that Mubin could have been under the influence of alcohol when he was driving.

Mubin, the son of a former army official, and Mirajul later tested positive for alcohol and marijuana.
