Students of Jahangirnagar University last night (22 July) brought out separate torch processions on campus, demanding justice for those killed in the Milestone School and College plane crash and protesting attacks on students allegedly carried out by military and police forces.
One of the torch processions began at 10:30pm from the university's Bot Tola area, where students carrying flaming torches marched across key points of the campus, chanting slogans against structural killings and state repression. The procession ended at the Shaheed Minar premises following a short press briefing at around 11pm.
Earlier in the evening, another student group under the banner 'Nipironer Biruddhe Jahangirnagar' also held a separate torch procession, expressing solidarity with the six-point demand of the protesting Milestone students.
They began their march at 7:30pm from the Shaheed Minar premises and moved through various campus roads. That procession concluded near the university transport area after a brief press statement condemning what they described as state violence against students and calling for justice for the "structural killing" that occurred at Milestone.
In addition, the university administration organised a mourning procession under the supervision of the Student Welfare and Counselling Centre, with the support of various cultural organisations.
The mourning procession, aimed at expressing solidarity and paying tribute to the deceased, began at 8:30pm from the Amar Ekushey premises.
Candles were lit in memory of the victims, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan present at the gathering. The procession ended at the university's Shaheed Minar at around 9:15pm.
