DMTCL employees form human chain in Uttara over job policy delay
Speakers at the human chain said that the absence of service rules has left officers and employees in prolonged job uncertainty.
Officials and employees of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) formed a human chain and staged a sit-in today (4 December) in Uttara, demanding the formulation of modern, government-compliant job policies.
The programme was held in front of the DMTCL head office located in the MRT Line-6 depot area in Uttara's Diabari.
Officers and employees recruited directly in grades 9 to 20 joined the demonstration, alleging that even 12 years after its establishment, DMTCL still lacks a modern, practical, and updated set of service regulations.
After the interim government assumed office, an office order – issued under the instruction of Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Md Fouzul Kabir Khan – directed that the service rules be implemented within 45 days.
However, demonstrators claim that due to the company's negligence, the directive has "for unknown reasons" not been implemented.
They added that during a similar protest nearly a year ago, the current managing director had promised to finalise the service rules within 30 days.
Although employees temporarily withdrew the protest based on that assurance, they alleged that no visible progress followed and accused the administration of deceiving officials and staff.
Speakers at the human chain said that the absence of service rules has left officers and employees in prolonged job uncertainty.
The protesters warned that if the formulation and gazette publication of the service rules are not finalised at the upcoming board meeting, they will announce tougher programmes.
The employees made a strong demand for the formulation of a job regulation for DMTCL's permanent officers and employees, who were recruited through direct open recruitment.
